Reshaping
A Deformed Plastic Kayak
Sometimes a plastic kayak can become deformed or out of shape from
improper storage or
transportation.
Below are some options for trying to fix this problem. If one
doesn't work, try the next.
Option 1: Give the kayak time to correct its own shape.
Step 1: Lay or hang the kayak
somewhere where there is no pressure on the distortion. Most of the
time the kayak will naturally reshape itself.
Option 2:
Use sunlight to warm the kayak and let it correct it's own shape.
Step 1: Lay or hang the kayak
in the sun for a few hours. Leave the distorted area facing up, towards
the sun, and make sure there is
no pressure the distorted area. The extra heat should help the kayak
naturally reshape itself.
Option 3: Heat the kayak and
manually
correct it's shape.
Materials required:
A hair dryer, 75 watt light globe or some other low heat source
A small weight or sandbag
Some way to suspend your kayak, deformation-down, off the ground
Step 1: Warm the deformed area
with the heat source until the hull is more pliable. Don't let it get
too hot so that it starts melting or burning.
Step 2: Push the kayak back
into shape by hand.
Step 3: Suspend the
deformation above the ground and place the weight or sandbag inside the
boat to help encourage the reshaped area to stay in shape.
Leave the kayak like this for about 24 hours.
